No. All of our color comes from natural dyes like indigo, madder, and pomegranate skin. No paint is used. A natural resist is applied to the bones to create the design, then it is dyed naturally, and the resist is removed, revealing the design underneath.

Our method of sourcing involves using bones found on private land, hunter dumps, food waste, and wildlife management sites. This ensures the bones are legally acquired and no animals were harmed for their bones.

This is a very long, detailed process that can take many months from start to finish. I outline my process in the natural bone dyeing tutorial if you would like to learn yourself.
The basic steps are tissue removal, degreasing, and whitening. There are so many ways to go about this, and there is no one correct way. It is important to wear proper PPE and utilize safe disposal of any chemicals that are used.
