Our Story

Spirit + Bones is created by Jane Jackalope as a way to fuse her personal artwork with her spiritual practice. She meticulously crafts natural dyes and uses them to adorn skulls and bones, taking objects from the end of one life into another expression of existence. Each bone is treated as a sacred object, adorned carefully to uplift and honor the animal spirit which once resided within.

Every bone used in this practice was either foraged on private land, or sourced of an animal utilized as a part of the food cycle or culling to help maintain healthy ecosystem. Sustainable and legal practices are all maintained with the integrity of life being the most important factor. No animals were harmed for the making of this work.

She ritually prays for each spirit, asking permission and thanking the animal for its contribution. Offerings are made for the land in ways that minimize impact to the ecosystem. The dyes used are created naturally with minimal impact on the land, and all waste being returned into the cycle of life.

Jane is an award winning artist in several states, and currently resides at in a small town in the Catskills, NY. She occasionally hosts retreats and classes. She has been working with natural dyes for over 10 years and has created her own bone dyeing system which involves using a natural resist to draw designs, which is then removed to create the design underneath the dye.
